In Hinduism, Om is a mantra, syllable, and symbol that embodies spiritual truth, divine energy, and the entire universe. It is composed of three syllables, A-U-M, and is said to contain all the sounds of creation.
Om is one of the most important spiritual sounds in Hinduism. It is the most sacred syllable symbol and mantra of Brahman, which is the ultimate reality, consciousness or Atman (Self within).
Om is defined by Hindu scripture as being the original vibration of the universe, which all other vibrations are able to manifest. It is the first sound from the beginning of time and it also encompasses the present and the future.
Om is used as a standard utterance at the beginning of mantras, chants or citations taken from the Vedas. It is also one of the fundamental symbols used in the yoga tradition.
