It started on Shueisha 's jumping miracle in May 2015 and was transferred to weekly Young Jump in March 2016. It was adapted into an anime television series by A-1 Pictures, broadcast from January to March 2019. A second season will premiere in April 2020. In North America, the manga is published in English by Viz Media and the anime series has been licensed by Aniplex of America. As of December 2019, the manga had more than 9 million copies in print. Ai is based on the celestial envoy from The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter who was tasked with returning Kaguya-hime to the moon. This was reflected in the star pattern that can be found on most of her personal belongings.
